Photographing a Ravenswood Event Center wedding:

Photographing Missy & Danny’s wedding was an absolute blast from start to finish. From the moment we met, they brought an infectious, joyful energy that made everything feel easy and natural in front of the camera. What stood out most, though, was their mindset on the wedding day itself — everything began from a place of love and authenticity. Their priority was simple and beautiful: bringing their favorite people together to celebrate. Everything else was secondary.

The day began at Hotel Zachary in Wrigleyville, which has quickly become one of my favorite getting-ready locations from a photography perspective. The suites feature floor-to-ceiling windows, creating soft, flattering light almost everywhere you look. Add in the hotel’s stylish, modern decor and it’s a dream setup for documentary-style wedding photography. We loved it so much that Missy & Danny chose to do their first look right in the room.

Because they were having a traditional Jewish ceremony, they decided to read their vows privately just after seeing each other. It was an incredibly sweet, emotional moment — the kind that reminds me why I love photographing weddings in a photojournalistic way, letting real moments unfold naturally.

Afterward, we took advantage of the hotel’s lobby for a few creative portraits, including a unique overhead shot of Missy’s dress. A huge part of making moments like this possible was the perfectly paced timeline put together by Jenny MacBeard of Blue Moon Events. Having a planner creates space for creativity, breathing room, and a smoother experience for everyone involved — and Jenny is truly fantastic.

From there, we headed to Ravenswood Event Center, a venue I always love photographing. One of its standout features is the vintage car collection and iconic neon signs — especially perfect for couples who want something a little different. Since it was a chilly February day, staying indoors for wedding party photos was key. By blending my own lighting with the venue’s ambient glow, we created portraits that felt both stylish and timeless.

Most of the time, I wrap up coverage about an hour after the dance floor opens — but Missy & Danny wanted their entire reception documented, from introductions to the very last song. And wow, did their guests deliver. The energy never dipped. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a crowd party that hard for that long, with hilariously fun moments unfolding right up until the end of the night.
