The Drake Chicago Wedding
Nicholas & Edward | Neon Lights and a Packed Dance Floor
Nicholas and Edward’s wedding day had everything I love about photographing weddings in Chicago — emotion, humor, incredible energy, and moments that couldn’t be planned if you tried.
The morning started inside the Drake Hotel, where both grooms got ready together with their people close by. Thoughtful gifts were exchanged; for Nick a stylish watch he’s always wanted, and for Ed a pen, Japanese ink and journal since he loves to write. Nerves mixed with anticipation and excitement, but the but the first look with the wedding party turned that immediately turned into laughter and joy.
We crossed the street for portraits at Lakefront Park, which is perfect spot for Drake couples. Just a little slice of green space nestled in the hustle of North Michigan Avenue. The wedding party understood the assignment. Fun, over-the-top in the best way, and completely themselves — which is exactly how authentic wedding photos happen. Sending the wedding party on their way, I spent a little time photographing just the grooms, where Nick & Ed’s true feelings for each other shone through in the images.
Back at The Drake, the ceremony slowed everything down. The kind of quiet, emotional moments that feel heavy in the best way, but then broken with perfectly timed laughter. Cocktails, the reception and toasts followed. I have to say, some of the best wedding party speeches I’ve heard. Full of heart and a healthy amount of roasting of the couple. In fact, two of Ed’s attendants admitted to actually hiring a speech write to help them with their toast… and it brought the house down!
Then came the dance floor. After the emotional first dance and dances with their mom’s, the floor opened and was packed from the outset. The kind of party where you can really feel the energy. Edward paid a little homage to Palestinian roots and a traditional dabkeh kicked things into high gear, guests clapping, cheering, moving, and fully committing.
We ended the night upstairs with rooftop portraits under The Drake’s glowing neon sign — a true Chicago classic, no notes. Nicholas and Edward’s day is proof that when you let yourself be fully present, the photos take care of themselves.
